Introduction

The Ottawa Charter was introduced for health promotion by World Health Organisation. It was introduced in the year 1986, when Health for All by 2000, was the aim of the World health organisation. This was held at an international conference in Ottawa, as the first international conference with the aim of Health promotion. This was designed to respond to the growing need for a new movement for the public worldwide. Discussions regarding this matter were directed to the needs of the industrialized countries also. The approach was made by the world health organisation in different assemblies and declarations. Health promotion is the promotion of a process to enable people to enhance their control over and look towards the improvement of their health. This health section includes all types of health like physical, social well-being, and mental health of the people. To reach the optimum, the individual needs to identify and realize their requirements and they also need to satisfy those needs and adapt to the new environment. Health involves all the aspects of resources like social, personal along physical capability. Health promotion does not only involve the health sector but also those which are associated with healthy lifestyles and well-being. Its prerequisites include shelter, peace, education, food, income, sustainable resources, and many more. Improving health may lead to the secure development of these prerequisites. Political, social, economical, cultural, behavioral, biological factors affect health either favorably or can be harmful. Health promotion aims to impact the conditions favorably. For this conference, more than 200 participants from around 38 countries met, and shared their experiences and knowledge about health promotion. This charter reflected the collective and individual commitment of the participants to the goal of health for all by 2000. The five strategies that it applied for the promotion of Health are, building a healthy policy for the public, development of personal skills, creation of supportive environments, re-orientation of health services, and strengthening the community action.

Discussion

The Ottawa charter, along with its strategies to fulfill the aim of health promotion, also created a framework for the nurses and their responsibility in the health of the public. The charter looked after the nurses to understand their role in the system of health care leading them to practice their responsibility in promoting the health and development of a community. This charter has been a milestone for the entire world health system. It is a template and seminal document created by the organisation (Thompson, Watson & Tilford, 2018). It continues to be a reference for the promotion of health. The nurses are trained in particular medical treatment practices that help in the treatment of the public. The nurses are provided with certain frameworks to follow, among which the Ottawa charter has been one. This charter guides the nurses to understand and imply interventions to stop the spreading of any harmful diseases or addictions. In community-based programs like Ottawa Charter, the nurses work with families, people for prevention of diseases, maintenance of health, and treatment of any existing problems regarding health. It can use illness prevention and promotion of well-being in its practice (Whitehead, 2018). The nurses are given the responsibility to promote and inform the general public about the benefits and applications of the presented program. Sometimes, nurses even help to gather data about the health conditions of a particular state or region which would help to build a healthy policy for the people of that particular region. The nurses are also knowledgeable about the deficiencies and crises of medicines or health services in certain regions. Nurses inform the higher authorities regarding the matter, therefore, helping to provide sufficient facilities. The Ottawa charter may be focused on the overall health of the world, but nurses are the ones who have kept the records and maintained the health improvement stable in the countries. The charter laid the foundation of the theory and practice of health promotion (Wilberg, Saboga-Nunes & Stock, 2021). Nurses are considered to be the substitutes for doctors who are available at the services of humanity. The nurses, therefore, increase the quality and efficiency of the health care systems through their services (Iriarte‐Roteta et al., 2021). They even provide the knowledge regarding social health awareness and programs that are provided by the governments and WHO. The nurses are the representatives of the programs executed by the different organisations and governments (Dahl, 2018). Therefore, the nurses provide information and deliver their services according to the benefits of the community decided in conferences like Ottawa Charter. The health sectors may provide the job role to the nurses but the nurses are well-equipped trained about their services. The nurses work selflessly to the development of the community, improving the health conditions, and working to achieve an assumption about the data of the status of the community. The Ottawa Charter has taken the help of the nurses for executing its strategies. The Ottawa Charter has provided the nurses with all the facilities required to improve the health sector of the community, as well as update the community with the knowledge of upgrading the health factors of the community.

Conclusion

Therefore, it can be concluded that nurses play a vital role in promoting health services and knowledge in the community. The nurses can enhance the crisis of healthy lifestyle and well-being in the surroundings. The nurses do require a lot of support systems from the organisation or governments to promote the health facilities. The nurses also require adequate training for promoting and sharing the knowledge of the effects of the policies introduced for the enhancement of the community. The charter along with the nurses has provided a new system for public health. They equally contributed to the making of a healthy policy, have tried to strengthen the action of the community for better health, guiding people to develop personal skills. The charter applied the strategy of enablement, mediation, and advocacy to develop the health services. This charter even created supportive environments with the help of nurses. The health services were reoriented for the promotion of health for the public, which was maintained and analysed by the nurses. Therefore, for any program or policy to succeed, the role of nurses is necessary. The nurses are considered to be the pillars of such organisation on which they organise, plan, and execute the plans for the betterment of the community.
