MLA Referencing in Australia

"Here it goes...You are working on a thesis or a long essay. You look out for facts, arguments, examples and all kinds of information that is related to the topic. The more information you get, the better the quality of your write-up."

But, do you know how to do citations in MLA format? Who uses the MLA format? How can you generate a reference list? Well, the GoAssignmentHelp assignment help services are here to solve all the mysteries of MLA citation and referencing! We are not only here to guide you on MLA 8th edition citation but our MLA reference and MLA citation generator is here to make the citation and referencing process hassle-free for you.

What is MLA referencing?

Modern Language Association or MLA is an organization that has standardized how scholars will cite sources in their work. The MLA 8th edition citation style is often used in subject areas like literature, languages, art, life sciences, music. theatre, social science, history, economics, mathematics and statistics etc. Many schools, colleges and universities in Australia recommend that students use this citation format.

Why is there a need to Reference?

As a scholar cites the resources in their work, it becomes easier for the readers to understand what kind of sources were used in the project. The readers might look through those resources to understand the concept of your write-up in a better way.

Citation is a good way to acknowledge other authors that you have borrowed their content. In other words, you are giving them credit for their work.

Citation and Monash referencing also save you from plagiarism. Don't be surprised! If you are using someone else's work in your paper without any reference then this is considered duplicity or simply stated - PLAGIARISM! So why get your paper rejected? Make a reference list for your work as early as possible!

MLA referencing in-text Citation with an Example

Till now we have seen examples of how you can include MLA references in the bibliography. But, do you know that you can also cite a source within the text? Such a citation format is brief and is called an in-text citation.

In-text citations are useful when you are summarizing a source, paraphrasing the source, or including a quote from a source.

Author

What to do

Citation Example

1 author

Give the author's last name.

(Smith 22" 45)

2 authors

Give both author's last names.

(Smith and Arnold 22" 45)

3+ authors

Name the first author followed by "et al."

(Smith et al. 22-45)

Corporate author

If a source was created by an organization other than the publisher, use the organization name as the author.

(Melbourne Welfare Program 22)

No author

If the author is the same as the publisher, or if no author is credited, use the source title instead. Format the title the same as in the full Works Cited reference, and shorten if it is more than four words.

("Australia Economy and Politics")

Multiple sources by the same author

Include the title (or a shortened version) after the author's name in each source citation.

(Smith, Samy, 22)

(Smith, Samy, 45)

What is an In-Text Citation or Parenthetical Citation?

You might have seen two kinds of in-text MLA citation examples:

Example 1: Smith conducted a study on how ATAR scores are affecting students' career choices (123).

Example 2: A study was conducted to analyse what factors contributed to a good ATAR score for students of different educational levels. (Smith, 123).

As you can see In-Text MLA Citation can be done in two ways:

  • Narrative Citation

When you write the name of the author in the sentence it is called Narrative Citation. In such citations, the page number where the information is found at the source is mentioned in parentheses after the sentence.

  • Parenthetical Citation

When you do not mention the Author's name in the sentence in which you are referring to an external source and provide the Author's name along with the page name in parentheses after the sentence, it is known as parenthetical citation.

Can you guess from the above MLA referencing style example, which in-text MLA citation is narrative and which is parenthetical?
