Career counseling is related to the career development when a graduate student has decided to get more than just getting a job or work in his/her life (Arulmani, 2004). This report is taken to discuss about the career counseling that is an effective and important process of career development of a graduate.

The Career Counseling:

The career counseling is associated with helping graduate students or individuals those have completed their education and have decided to choose an appropriate career for personal and professional development. The career selection is generally based on the interests, skills and abilities of individuals for which they prefer to choose an appropriate career counseling or mentoring platform to pick a right field. In this way of career selection of individuals help them to complements their abilities and skills effectively and efficiently (Arulmani, 2004). Thus, the career counseling is conducted by career counselors that assist students to select an appropriate field of work on the priority basis that suit their skills and interests.

Therefore, the objective of the career counseling is associated with helping students to pick an appropriate career according to the interests and skills and development in their life both at the personal and professional level. Therefore, the importance of career counseling can be seen as motivating students to make decisions on how to study and what to study to develop career for whole life with sustainability. The importance of career counseling is also related to advise students or graduates to avoid any type of confusion in their life while making decision for personal and professional growth (Arulmani, 2004).

The careers counselors make students mature to decide the right things. In order to increase or brings out the personal interest of an individual to pursue his/her career after completion of studies, the guidance of career counselor gives right direction to the student in their way. At this stage, career counselors play the most important role in counseling of students through specific application of counseling psychology (McMahon, 2017). The application of counseling psychology by career counselors supports students or graduates to improve their capabilities of assessment and move towards right direction to choose a right career field.

There are several challenges to the graduates in choosing a right career path. The challenges that distract the students in choosing their right career are lack of passions and skills as well as wrong mentoring of the people. The distraction in the life of the students should be avoided otherwise it can spoil their life at all (McMahon, 2017). Maximum students that generally choose a career field in their life are mainly based on their environment. It can be seen that most of the graduates get inspiration from a successful persons and try to become like them in their life.

This way of career selection makes them unsuccessful because of lack of skills and no understanding about the right field. The current challenges reduce the effect of optimization because of this; most of the students avoid using their knowledge and understanding in their career selection. The experiences and their behavior can also help them to move in choosing right path in career development, but lack of focus on priorities in their life make useless career selection (McMahon, 2017). In this scenario, the career counseling platform of the students always does right things in their career development. The effect of career counseling can be seen as helping students to answer important questions related to their study. Such way of career counseling starting with right education course and choosing right career field move them towards a successful people in the world.

It is the responsibility of the students to select right course for education and right place to study and find out ways to make it happen in their life. Furthermore, it is the true fact that teachers play the most important role in career counseling that is around 10% during study of the students. As a career counselor, teachers help to bridge the gap of career selection of the students at the time of course study they teach the students in the classroom (McMahon, 2017). This is the outside of career counseling world, but they are very effective to motivate students to focus towards right path in selection of course study and related working field after completion of graduation degree.

On the other side, the career counseling is based on some effective techniques in which career counselors use these techniques to provide right guidance to make the future of the students and graduates better than their expectations. The career counselors use the techniques of therapeutic relationship development with students to tell them all forms of counseling (Maree, 2018). With the help of meaningful connection with the students, career counselors use career aptitude tests and personality tests to provide right direction that is beyond simple vocational guidance. The recognition of worries, interests, fears, and desires of the students are the base of career counselors on which they provide full support and guidance in career making.

Further, defining goals of the student is also a technique that is used by career counselors on the priority basis. The career counselor asks student to define their right job and reach in next five years. The focus on the attention of the students in their life is also part of goals that the career counselors decide to know and suggest them right direction (Maree, 2018). This is helpful to the students as defining a career seeker goal effectively and efficiently. Career counselors also create room for self exploration for students to for vocational tests. The space to talk with the students’ issues that affect their career and career choices, this technique lead them towards a gateway to self-discovery.

At the same time, career counselors also help the students to understand the job market. They keep the students stay abreast of the issues facing the job market. At this stage, they turn the life of students into career goals effectively and efficiently. At this stage, the focus of career counselors to do counseling of students is related to helping them to gain greater self-awareness in which their interests, values, abilities, and personality style are considered on the priority basis (Maree, 2018). Career counselors link the students with job opportunities in the market through providing information and resources they can use to become more knowledgeable in their life related to the jobs and path of study in right direction.

After discussion on career counseling, it can be stated that it is important to influence individuals to know themselves what they want instead of just getting a job.
